A modern university with a rich tradition

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is an entrepreneurial university at the forefront of technological development. As such it is perpetually involved in furthering technological advancement in the interests of society. By means of its fundamental and applied research and educational programmes, TU Delft trains the engineers of tomorrow.
Founded on 8 January 1842 by King William II of the Netherlands, TU Delft has a rich tradition reaching back 165 years. TU Delft is the largest and most comprehensive university of engineering sciences in the Netherlands. Our facilities are among the best in Europe. New concepts and solutions for existing problems are being developed continuously at the Delft campus. We offer office and laboratory space, access to a world-class research infrastructure and the expertise of professionals.
TU Delft is a state university which conducts cutting-edge research and provides first-class education. In addition to national accreditation, many of TU Delft’s educational programmes have also been acknowledged by international organisations such as the American Board of Engineering & Technology (ABET). TU Delft’s research portfolio is clustered around thirteen interdisciplinary technological themes, examples of which are Water, Computational Science and Engineering and Nanotechnology. Research is conducted within the faculties, research institutes and research schools. Each year, the university’s cumulative research results in an average of 250 PhD dissertations and over 4,000 publications in scientific journals.
In the immediate vicinity of TU Delft, a large-scale, spacious Research & Development site has been realised: Technopolis Innovation Park. It is a site that is meant primarily for companies with a strong research & development component. The companies that locate in Technopolis will be able to enjoy the benefits of optimal access to the knowledge at TU Delft, a prime economic location and collaboration with the (local) government. Technopolis has all the key ingredients to become one of the leading science parks in Europe.
With the aim of stimulating cooperation between the business sector, the government and the university, TU Delft has set up a knowledge centre: the TU Delft Valorisation Centre. The Valorisation Centre forms the interface between TU Delft and the needs of industry, with a focus on strategic research collaborations. Methods include organising customer days for large businesses and providing the SME sector with support on research issues. YES!Delft (a partnership between TU Delft and local government) has been established to help start-up businesses. And for postgraduate education and in-company training courses, TU Delft offers a wide range of opportunities via Delft TopTech.
Effective cooperation between universities and companies is the driving force behind innovation in the Netherlands. This creates economic value and helps to solve social problems. This spirit of collaboration is embodied in the joint research and education initiatives launched by Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) and TU Delft. Shell is currently investing in a four-year sustainable mobility programme which encompasses research areas ranging from sustainable hydrogen production to improved batteries for hybrid cars and the harnessing of solar energy for fuel production. In addition to this research programme, Shell has invited TU Delft as one of four international universities to join in its global Project Academy.
The other three universities in this consortium are the University of Texas at Austin/McCombs School of Business in USA, Cranfield School of Management in UK, and Queensland University of Technology in Australia. Shell Project Academy is an integrated competence development programme for Shell employees working at all stages of the project lifecycle. The programme includes learning events, assessment and accreditation, coaching and mentoring services, a global online knowledge network, project community events, and work experience opportunities.
